Hopefully, you’ve hired a nanny
with good enough judgment that she will know what clothing is appropriate and
inappropriate to wear, but sometimes you have to give the nanny a “nudge” in
the right direction when it comes to attire. Obviously the nanny should wear
clothes that are easy to move around in, as opposed to high heels and tight
skirts, but what is less obvious may be sexy clothing that can send the wrong
message to a delivery person coming to your house when you are not home.
If the nanny is trying to get
sexual attention, you have a blatant problem on your hands that you need to
address with your spouse, and then the nanny, immediately.
If your nanny is not
aware of her sexuality and her appeal in what she considers “fun” clothing,
then you have to give her some “big sister” advice and explain that she is very
beautiful, and that you don’t want other people coming to the house to distract
her from her job by asking her on dates, etc., so that for everyone’s sake, it
would be great if she could stop wearing halter tops without bras at work, (or
whatever clothing comes to mind) and save them for Saturday night parties where
the mood is more adult and festive.
Don’t make a value judgment on what
she is wearing. Simply make suggestions. If you want to go the extra step, get
her a tee shirt or two from the Gap or Old Navy for an Easter, Christmas or
Valentine’s Day gift to her – from you and your child. Let the child pick out
the colors.
Before you set up a nanny schedule, consider your own
schedule. What is it that you hope to do while your child is in the nanny’s
care? Will you be at a high-powered, office job forty-five minutes away? Will
you be selling real estate and showing houses at different locations while your
nanny cares for your child? Or do you work at home, and you just need someone
to entertain your child so you can get some work done in your home office? Or
do you want to go to the gym and do shopping while your nanny is caring for
your child?
