Chapter 12
When Your Nanny Does Not Work Out
If a nanny quits, she will either do it
professionally, with two weeks notice, or she will do it abruptly with no
notice. Unfortunately, quitting abruptly does not keep a nanny from getting
another job. People do hire nannies that quit abruptly, so you should know that
this is a possibility.
If you find you no longer need your nanny you should
give her a two weeks notice, or longer as a courtesy, or until she finds
another job. Some of these reasons are:
Your children are in school
so many hours during the day that you no longer need a nanny to look after
them.
You have been fired from
your job and you can’t afford her any more.
You have quit your job
because you want to be home with your children.
You are moving to another
city or state.
Your children are old enough
to be home alone, and you no longer need a nanny to look after them.
The children are going to
overnight camp for the summer, and you do not need her any more.
A grandparent is going to be
moving in, and will be taking over the care of your child in your household.
All of these reasons for letting a nanny go are
valid and understandable to everyone. When it is time to say goodbye to a
nanny, it is better for the child to understand the separation that will occur.
It is a very nice touch to throw a little cake and juice party for the nanny on
her last day at work, and invite the other children and their nannies from the
neighborhood.
In addition to the above
reasons for losing a nanny are the following reasons for which a nanny may
quit:
The nanny is getting married
and/or having a child, so she wants to make a lifestyle change and not work any
more.
The nanny has decided to go
back to school full time instead of working as a nanny.
The nanny has decided that she needs a live in or a live out
job, which you cannot offer.
